This is the first question every buyer asks, and the answer depends on one thing: how reliable is your grid supply, and do you need power when it fails?

The plain-English difference

  • On-grid: the system runs alongside the DISCOM supply, exports surplus units and shuts down automatically during an outage (anti-islanding, a safety requirement). No battery, lowest cost.
  • Off-grid: solar plus batteries with no grid connection at all. Highest cost per kW, complete independence.
  • Hybrid: on-grid with a battery bank, so you export surplus and still have backup when supply fails.

Choose on-grid if…

Your supply is broadly reliable, you want maximum savings per rupee and you have meaningful daytime or net-metered consumption. For most urban Maharashtra homes, this is still the rational choice.

Choose hybrid if…

You have frequent evening outages, work from home, run a clinic, or cannot tolerate interruptions — a fridge full of medicine, a home office server, a lift, or an elderly family member dependent on medical equipment. A 5 kWh lithium bank typically runs lights, fans, router and a refrigerator for four to six hours.

Choose off-grid if…

There is no connection available, the connection cost is high, or the site is remote — farmhouses, borewell pump houses, telecom sites and construction offices. Diesel generator replacement is often the strongest business case.

The one mistake to avoid

Buying a hybrid system sized for whole-house backup. Sizing the battery for every air conditioner doubles the price and usually delivers a payback nobody wants. Size the battery for a defined list of critical loads and duration — we prepare that list with every customer before quoting.

Frequently asked questions

How much subsidy do I get on rooftop solar in Maharashtra?
Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, residential consumers get ₹30,000 per kW up to 2 kW and ₹78,000 in total for 3 kW and above. The amount is credited directly to your bank account after installation and net-metering are completed.
How many units does a 3 kW solar system generate per month?
In Maharashtra a well-designed 3 kW rooftop system generates roughly 340–380 units per month across the year, higher in March–April and lower during the monsoon. That typically offsets most or all of a 2–3 BHK household’s consumption.
How long does installation take after I confirm?
Structural work and installation usually take 7–14 days for residential systems once material reaches your site. Net-metering approval and meter installation by MSEDCL typically add 3–6 weeks depending on the circle office workload.
Do you help with the PM Surya Ghar subsidy application?
Yes. We register your application on the national portal with your consumer number, follow up the feasibility approval with your DISCOM, submit the commissioning certificate and track the subsidy until it is credited to your bank account.
