Marketing claims of "90% bill reduction" are meaningless without numbers. Here is the actual arithmetic for a Maharashtra household, using conservative generation and realistic tariff slabs.

The generation side

A well-designed 1 kW rooftop system in Maharashtra generates roughly 120 units (kWh) per month across the year — higher in March and April, lower in July and December. So a 3 kW system yields about 360 units monthly, or 4,320 units a year.

The consumption side

MSEDCL residential tariffs are slab-based. The last units you consume are the most expensive, and solar offsets those first. A household consuming 400 units pays for its final 100 units at the highest slab rate.

A worked example: 3 kW system

ItemValue
System size3 kW
Turnkey cost₹1,95,000
PM Surya Ghar subsidy− ₹78,000
Net investment₹1,17,000
Monthly generation~360 units
Units consumed before solar (say)400 units
Units billed after solar~40 units + fixed charges
Average monthly saving₹2,600–₹3,100
Payback3 to 3.5 years

After payback, the same system keeps producing for another 20 years with only cleaning and an occasional inverter replacement. Over 25 years, most 3 kW owners see cumulative savings in the range of ₹9–₹12 lakh depending on tariff escalation.

What changes the answer

  • Tariff slab: the higher your consumption, the faster the payback.
  • Self-consumption ratio: using solar during the day beats exporting it, unless your state allows full net-metering credits.
  • Dust and cleaning: uncleaned modules lose 8–15% of generation — a genuine ₹8,000–₹14,000 a year on a 5 kW system.
  • Design quality: undersized cables, poor earthing and shading cut output silently for years.

Should you take a loan?

At 9.5% over 60 months, the EMI on a 3 kW net cost of ₹1,17,000 works out to roughly ₹2,450 a month — less than the bill saving. In effect the system pays its own EMI from month two, which is why solar loans have become popular among salaried homeowners.

Frequently asked questions

How much subsidy do I get on rooftop solar in Maharashtra?
Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, residential consumers get ₹30,000 per kW up to 2 kW and ₹78,000 in total for 3 kW and above. The amount is credited directly to your bank account after installation and net-metering are completed.
How many units does a 3 kW solar system generate per month?
In Maharashtra a well-designed 3 kW rooftop system generates roughly 340–380 units per month across the year, higher in March–April and lower during the monsoon. That typically offsets most or all of a 2–3 BHK household’s consumption.
How long does installation take after I confirm?
Structural work and installation usually take 7–14 days for residential systems once material reaches your site. Net-metering approval and meter installation by MSEDCL typically add 3–6 weeks depending on the circle office workload.
Do you help with the PM Surya Ghar subsidy application?
Yes. We register your application on the national portal with your consumer number, follow up the feasibility approval with your DISCOM, submit the commissioning certificate and track the subsidy until it is credited to your bank account.
